Narrative
Volume one of this two-volume set covers historical trends and two major aspects of drilling technologies, downhole motors and oil well drilling optimization (Key Technological Wells drilling method) Unlike the U.S. and other countries, which use rotary drilling, the Russians use downhole hydraulic and electrical motors that power the bit downhole. Using a downhole motor is more efficient, especially in hard formations. Advanced drilling studies have long been conducted in the FSU and are important in reducing drilling costs in marginal reservoirs. This technology is beginning to gain popularity in the U.S. and other countries.

Key Features and Benefits
Valuable Russian drilling techniques translated into English
An excellent historical account of the development of drilling technologies in the FSU
Includes mathematical models and rationale for the KTW drilling method

About the Authors
Mamdouh Gadallah has more than 30 years of worldwide experience in geophysics, geology, and petroleum engineering. His career began as a field production and reservoir engineer based in Egypt, working in the Sinai Desert for AGIP. He then relocated to the U.S. and worked in the same capacity with a consulting firm before joining Seismograph Service Corporation as a seismic interpreter. Gadallah has a BS in petroleum engineering, with graduate studies in geophysics at the Universities of Cairo and Tulsa. He has taught numerous seminars for the University of Tulsa, Division of Continuing Education. He is an active member of SEG and the Geophysical Society of Tulsa.

Ray L. Fisher has more than 40 years of experience in developing specialized training in both geology and geophysics. He began his career with Geophysical Service, Inc. in Dallas before moving to Halliburton and then to Western Geophysical, both in Houston. Fisher earned a BS and MS in Physics from Oklahoma State University. He is a member of Society of Exploration Geophysicists and Geophysical Society of Houston.

Book Reviews:
“While processing is covered, the level is well suited to field personnel...the particularly high number of illustrations sets the book apart. Another commendable feature is the wide-ranging nature of the subject-matter- people new to the industry (and there are many coming into RXT) are able to gain an understanding of the bigger geophysical picture, and how OBC fits into it, from a single volume.”
-- Tony M. North Seas

“The recent demand in the petroleum sector for new hires in all aspects of the business and the lack of practical training has created a major gap in the industry. Most of the books published by the professional societies and their training programs are highly specialized. The book by Gadallah and Fisher fills this void; it is timely and is a one stop shop for new interns, graduates and returnees to the business. The book covers all aspects of petroleum exploration, development and reservoir monitoring. The book is orderly, well written, clear illustrations and contains plenty of practical examples. It is concluded with an extensive appendices and a bibliography. The integrated approach by the authors to the subject makes the book distinctive. I highly recommend it to practicing geoscientist, reservoir seismologists, processors and field operators.”

Narrative
Basic Well Log Analysis is a general introduction to common open hole logging measurements, both wire line and MWD/LWD, and the interpretation of those measurements to determine the traditional analytical goals of porosity, fluid saturation, and lithology/mineralogy. It is arranged by the interpretation goals of the data, rather than by the underlying physics of the measurements.

The accompanying CD-ROM contains digital versions of the data from the case studies, a summary guide to the measurements and their interpretation, and a simple spreadsheet containing some of the more common interpretation algorithms.

This Second Edition of Basic Well Log Analysis delivers a great impact on training and self-training along with superior workbook exercises, newer measurements, borehole imaging, and nuclear magnetic resonance in separate chapters, all directed to provide a guide through the lengthy and sometimes ambiguous terminology of well logging and petro physics. It provides readers with interpretation examples (and solutions) so that the techniques described here can be practiced.
