The MTV Association was started in Seattle, Washington U.S.A. during 2005, as the industry was beginning to show signs of being shorthanded. Today you can pick up any trade magazine and read of a marine industry becoming very concerned with training, recruiting, and retaining workers.

It’s time for mariners to join and support an association of their own! Every mariner is aware that there are an increasing number of government regulations that impact the marine industry and alter the course of their jobs. Boat companies are becoming larger and larger and these companies and the government regulators are continuing to limit mariners’ choices. NMA is an association of “lower-level” mariners working for mariners on tugs, towboats, offshore supply vessels, and small passenger vessels. NMA works to preserve the Jones Act to ensure there is always a U.S.-flag maritime industry we can work in. NMA promotes the professionalism of our mariners and their valuable contributions to our economy, industry, the community and the U.S. Merchant Marine we are a proud part of.

2006 marked Captain Jan Tiura's 30th year working aboard tugboats and 40 years as a professional photographer.
Tugs and tankers, cranes and container ships, Golden Gate dawns, Pacific sunsets, and Coastside fogs are all part of tugboat Captain Jan Tiura's workday world, a world she turns to magic through the lens of her digital camera.
As a photographer, her work has appeared in WorkBoat Magazine, Professional Mariner Magazine, Sail Magazine, Bicycling Magazine, Mountain Gazette, and local newspapers, and on exhibit in the Potomac Visitors Center in Oakland, California, the World Trade Club in San Francisco, California, and most recently, at the Cafe Museo at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Joseph P. DeMuccio (1945-1997) loved tugboats and wanted to share his interest with other enthusiasts. Since there were no tugboat enthusiast groups at the time, he started this one, calling it the Tugboat Enthusiasts Society of the Americas (TES). They also publish: Tugbitts - The Journal of the Tugboat Enthusiasts Society, published for its members. TES is entirely based upon the generosity of its members and the efforts of volunteers. To improve - to plan gatherings - to produce our quarterly journal TugBitts - we need YOUR help. Please join us. If you stop to watch when you see a tugboat cruise past, then you should consider becoming a Tugboat Enthusiasts Society member.
